Chapter 3 of 8
Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini
The honest, no-hype take on the big three, and why the model matters less than you think
If you've spent any time reading about AI, you've seen the fight. Every week someone posts a new chart, a new benchmark, a new "this one just beat that one." It's easy to think you're falling behind because you haven't picked a side.
You're not. For the work you actually do, the honest answer is that all three are good, and the gap between them is smaller than the internet wants you to believe.
What each one is, in plain terms
These are the three big assistants. Same idea, different company behind it.
- ChatGPT, from OpenAI, is the one most people mean when they say "AI." It's the default, it's everywhere, and it's a solid all-arounder. If a friend showed you AI for the first time, it was probably this.
- Claude, from Anthropic, has a reputation for writing that sounds human and for chewing through long documents without losing the thread. Handy when the job is a 30-page report or a contract you need facts out of.
- Gemini, from Google, lives where your Google account already lives. If your inbox, calendar, and docs are all Google, it's sitting right next to them.
That's the real lineup. Three good engines from three big companies, all improving every few months.
Why the winner changes every month
Here's the part that saves you a lot of worrying. They leapfrog each other constantly. One pulls ahead on some test, the next update flips it, and three months later the order is different again.
So picking "the best one" today is like picking the fastest car by reading last season's results. By the time you've memorized the ranking, it's already wrong. Chasing it is a part-time job, and it isn't yours.
For an agent's day, the differences barely show
Think back to the four jobs. Drafting, reading, remembering, looking things up. For those, any of the three will do fine. The follow-up email reads well from all of them. All of them can pull three dates out of a contract. The differences the experts argue about live at the edges, in work most agents never touch.
What actually decides whether AI helps you isn't the brand on the tab. It's two things.
- Context. An assistant that knows your clients, your deals, and your deadlines beats a smarter one that knows nothing about you. A blank chat box starts every task as a stranger. You end up feeding it the same background over and over, and that's where the time you saved quietly leaks back out.
- Where it lives. A genius in another browser tab still makes you copy, paste, and re-explain. An assistant sitting inside your inbox and your transactions just does the work.
Pick the smartest model in the world and drop it in an empty tab, and you're back to a typing exercise. That's why "which model" is the wrong first question.
So which should you use?
If you want to play with one to get a feel for it, grab whichever you already have. ChatGPT if you want the default, Gemini if you live in Google, Claude if you're handing it a lot of writing or long documents. You won't make a wrong choice.
But for running your business, you shouldn't have to pick at all. The right tool uses a strong model under the hood, swaps to a better one when it ships, and brings your context to every task so you never start from a blank box. The engine is plumbing. Your deals are the point.
